Gender Equality and Subjectivity

Gender Equality and Subjectivity

The philosophic issue of whether we should look at the world with objectivity and subjectivity has been under controversial for a long time. Some people claim that objectivity is the best way to know the truth about reality. I disagree with this claim. From my perspective, objectivity is not the best way to get to the truth because subjectivity also plays an important part.

Philosophically, objectivity refers to people’s perception of the world without bias and feelings, reflecting the state of being true while subjectivity means that people look at the world with their experience and feelings. Since the truth is defined by human beings, it is hard to tell that all truths of realities are defined without subjectivity because human beings are subjective creatures and judge the world with their experiences and feelings. Therefore, objectivity is comparable subjectivity and the collection of many subjectivities. Therefore, it can be said that objectivity is not the best way to know the truth of reality. It is quite hard to achieve absolute objectivity without any bias. Hence, it could be seen that objectivity is not the best way to know the truth of reality because truth contains the characteristics of both objectivity and subjectivity, which means that truth is the combination of objectivity and subjectivity. However, since objectivity is comparable subjectivity and the only method we look at the world is from the perspective of subjectivity, subjectivity is the most practical way to know the truth of reality. In the following part, I would analyze the equality of men and women from the aspect of subjectivity.

With the mushrooming development of feminism movement, there are more and more people calling for the equality between women and men. I agree that men and women should be equal in pursuing rights and share the equal economic and political positions. It is doubtless that from the aspect of objectivity, women and men are different in the physical structures and women also bear the role of reproduction. For example, there is no deny that generally men have more advantages in physical strength than women. Hence, it is impossible to achieve the exact equality of women and men from the aspect of objectivity. However, from the perspective of subjectivity, we could allow the existence of gender equality. For example, women should be respected as men. It is not because women are vulnerable groups so that women should be respected but because they have the same ability to think and to work as men. It is true that men and women have lots of differences. In society and in family life, the roles and social division labor of men and women are different, but their positions in society and in family life should be equal. Because of the great differences between men and women in various aspects, it is to be true quite hard to achieve the exact equality no matter it is in the developing countries or in the developed countries. The equality between men and women is comparable equality. For instance, it is advocated that men and women share the same position in politics. Besides, implementing the practice of comparable equality means admitting and respecting the differences between men and women. In this way, we can turn the bias towards women as an advantage, for women and men could play the complementary role, which advances the development of society.

In conclusion, I disagree the claim that objectivity is the best way to know the truth. Women and men could be equal from the perspective of subjectivity
