Hotel Rwanda and Fanon’s Ideas

By watching the film Hotel Rwanda, I am shocked by the disaster after the independence of black people. In the Fanon’s books, the wretched of the earth and black skin and white masks, we can clearly recognize that after the liberation of the black people, it still exists same problems in the society of black people. In the film, it describes a situation that the fight between the two tribes of the Rwanda. The two tribes become to suspect to each other. And also, it leads to an unprecedented armed conflict and racial genocide. As the author Fanon holds the view that the liberation of the black people still exists some problems in the future society.

In the film Hotel Rwanda, we recognize that the war history has a great influence on their life. “It documents for a mass audience what it was like. It's useful, in that it shows how it can happen. It's even hopeful, in that it shows that it's possible—not guaranteed, but possible—for people to maintain their humanity in the face of unhinged barbarism” (Lasalle 23). At the meantime, in the book the author presents the opinion that why the liberation of black people leads to the latter problems. In the film, the conflict between two tribes is based on the untrusty of each other. And this is connected to the problems existing in the black people movement. In order to solve this problem, it still needs a long time to fight for the success of the independent war.

In terms of the relationship between the film and Fanon’s two novels, it is necessary to mention that the cause of the Rwanda War is due to the reasons that two novels have told us. It is just because the problems left after the liberation of the black people that leads to the inharmonious relationship between the two tribes in Rwanda.
