There’s really not a real cause of the cultural revolution even though there are some very systematic research works scattered with all kinds of rumors, to the reasons for the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution is almost impossible to come to one single idea. It’s a chain of mistakes by a group of mighty people that outbreak with a variety of reason and profit party.
First of all, the long-term accumulation, low consumption lead to the improvement of people's living standards seriously lagging behind the economic development. Non-market economic development leads to a large number of structural unemployment, due to the low level of people's life, leading to sluggish demand for consumer goods and services which can accommodate a large number of labor in service industry practitioners. In other word, they're not enough jobs in the market for young people that became a threat to the national security.
At that time, people's belief in socialism and communism were very firm, but they can't understand why they have established the country they want, but still can't realize their dream of equality and prosperity. The people and their leaders were looking for someone to blame when the leader took all this to the bourgeois in power and accepted it without hesitation; an unprecedented big movement took place.
First, the impact of political unrest and damage to the production and construction, resulting in a direct material loss. Secondly, the speed of economic development is slow, and there is no great achievement in the formulation of the rate of the economy compared to what other major countries did during that time. Finally, the living standards of the people are not correspondingly improved. By 1971, there are still 250 million people in the countryside suffer from hunger. There’s no doubt that it’s a cultural disaster for China.
