Go Set a Watchman Go Set a Watchman

Go Set a Watchman Go Set a Watchman

1. Maycomb of Go Set a Watchman is a typical rural town in the southern American and isolated from outside of the world. As the book described that Maycomb was so cut off from the rest of the nation, no trains went Maycomb Junction in early time, and bus service was erratic and seemed to go nowhere. Until the Federal Government forced the town to have a highway through the swamps.

2.Status Finch family is a close-knit family in Maycomb, because of historic reason, the Colonel Maycomb’s troops after the Indian wars had settled and became the Finch family ancestors, they were passed down by the word of mouth, so every Maycombian knows them. Jean’s father is directors on the board of council, so as one of white and prestigious man, he have an influence in the town, they also share the same freedom and privileges like other whites. Other whites also have an expectation for them to support the racial segregation.

3.Jean uncle said that the Watchmen is a person’s conscience and island, Jean Louise Finch of Watchman is fastened on her father in the story beginning, which is easily destroyed, Jean have her conscience which stands as the antithesis of her father conscience. She is so cynical and critical, she does not conform to the ideal of womanhood of the 1950s, and the ideal lady should be a simpering, mealy-mouthed magnolia type and live on their husband

4. Living in New York had an impact on Jean Louise personality because New York is a city that you are your person, you can do everything if you want to do. She feels that people are living New York just different from Maycomb residents, they have manners.

 5. I feel the humor, patience and integrity still apply in Atticus Character. Taking one of clipping in the story for example, Atticus had told him in one of his rare comments on her. “Don’t push her. Let her go at her own speed. Push her and every mule in the counties be easier to live with.” From Atticus said, it is not difficult to find his patience, and those character of Atticus is widely accepted in the small town. As for the humor, when she told her father about the swimming in lake naked, her father said: “I hope you weren’t doing the backstroke.”

 6. At beginning of story, Jean Louise treat him as lifelong friend, and her brother comrade, she has a favor to him, however, her aunt thought that Henry is fine boy but never suitable for her, part of reason is due to his parents, father deserted him and mother died drunk on the railroad, Finches do not marry the children of red necked with trash.

7. The isolation makes the people be a person who not easily accepted the change, and they treated outsiders like Jean with critical thought and disapproving attitudes.

8. The citizen wouldn’t stand with the decent government in Maycomb, citizen council is a protest to the court, the government cannot get hand on their issues about The racial segregation.

 9. The relationship between Jean Louise and Atticus is good at beginning of the novel, her father even joked her with swimming in middle of night. However, when she found her father hold a racial prejudice toward black, she is devastated and upset.

10.  When she realize her mistake, she said sorry to her father, surprisingly, her father said he is proud of her  because he hope her daughter will hold her ground for what she thinks is right. They both make a compromise. Because they love both so much.

11.It is built up to prepare themselves well for the things that will unexpectedly happen later, she feel upset because she found her father is the director of the citizen council, she feel shocking.

12. Atticus’s action hold a justice toward the Blacks in the town. However, Atticus feel that the Black should be separated from the White, because the black is unthinkable and backwards. He support the racist segregation.

13. They were condoning his message as for First Amendment right to free speech, Atticut did not agree with the man from his conversation between him and Jean.

14. When they saw her, they stood straight and retreated from the edge of the porch, becoming as one. The men removed their hats and caps. They stood silent, respectful, and were watching her intently. The answer is no because she shook her head, I feel she was truthful, because of her hesitation for the question.

15. The decision in Brown v. Board of Education decided to break segregation in public schools. In the novel, we can see that he attended one meeting and became their director of the newly formed citizen’s councils which is a protest to the court in the South.

16. Jean was furious that decision while her father Atticus held a disagreement towards it. She answered her feeling about the decision “Nothing much, but it scared me.”

17. I feel that she has changed, because the living in New York brought her other thoughts that are different from other people, she is not the person she thought anymore.

18. Atticus is answering her last statement that she claim “You’re the only person I think I’ve ever fully trusted, and now I’m done for”. He means that he disappointed Jean Louise, and killed her trust for him.

19.Uncle Jack tried to tell Jane that her conscience depended on her father, now it collapsed, because her true conscience is the antithesis of her father’s conscience, so she have to found her true conscience. She is a turnip-sized bigot, because a bigot doesn’t give up their idea when someone challenge it. They stay rigid. Doesn’t even try to listen, just lashes out.

20. The title has a purpose to enunciate the theme novel, I feel the whole story is about Jean’s awaking of her true conscience.
