In the past 300 hundred years, there is a dominant technology in one century. In the 18th century, accompanying with the industry revolution advent, it comes to the Machine Age; in the 19th century, it is the Steam Era; in the 20th century, the primary technology is the acquisition, storage, transmission, management and utilize of information; in the 21th century, we come into Internet Era, which accelerates the transmission of information.


The computer is one of the greatest inventions for human beings in the 20th century. The generation of it symbolizes that people come into a brand new information society. In order to increase the productivity of information society, it is necessary to seek for a means to get information faster and more convenient. Therefore, The Internet comes into being and since then it becomes an essential part of our daily life.


When it comes to the development history of the network in the whole world, we have to acknowledge that it has experienced a process from a single network to the internet. In the year 1997, Mr. Bill Gates, President of Microsoft Company addressed a famous speech on the computer technology Expo. In his speech, he emphasized the argument “the internet is a computer.” This case embodies the position of the web in the information society. The development of the internet of equipment technology more and more becomes the core of modern high and new technology. The development of the computer internet is divided into several stages.


  1. The first stage is the Invention Stage (computer network terminal). The typical application of this first generation is book system. Terminal means the outer facility of a computer including monitor and keyboard, not included CPU and internal storage. With the increase of remote terminal, the FEP has been added to the main engine. At that time, computer internet was defined that it is joined together in order to transmit information, realizing remote information disposal and getting a further material share. But this kind of communication system has qualified necessary formation of the internet. The earlier computer, in order to improve material utilization rate, adopts the working manner of disposal in bulk.   2. The second stage is the Formation Stage (computer communication network). Between the 1960s and 1970s, the second generation computer network was created. Because of lacking in a uniformed standard, it is difficult for the different manufacturers to connect their products. People eager to find an open, standard, and practical internet environment. This leads to the development of the two most important kinds of internet systems which can use in the entire world.

  4. The fourth stage is High-Speed Internet Technology (a new generation of computer network). Since the 1990s, it comes with the fourth generation computer network. Due to the maturity of the local area network, the advent of fiber & high-speed internet technology, multimedia network, and intelligent internet, the entire internet is like an apparent and huge computer system to its users. And the development of the internet also experiences three phases.

    The first phase is developing from single ARPANET to

    Internet. In 1969, the first set up grouping exchange internet ARPANET was just a single grouping exchange internet (not the internet). In the mid of 1970s, ARPA starts to study the multi-connection technology, and this propels the advent of the internet. In 1983, ARPANET was divided into two parts. One is used for the study and scientific research which is called ARPANET; another one is used for the military purpose called MILNET. In 1990, ARPANET was announced officially to be closed. The trial was completed.

           The second phase is to establish a tertiary structure Internet. In 1986, NSF-funded national scientific foundation Net called NSFNET. It is a third class computer Internet and is divided into the main Internet, district Internet and Campus Internet. In 1991, the American government decided to turn over the main Internet part to personally owned business to operate. At the same time, the American government began to change fees for the access to the Internet. In 1993, the main branch of Internet increased its speed to 45mb/s.

           The third phase is to establish multi-level ISP structure for the Internet. Since 1993, the NSFNET, which was funded by the American government was gradually replaced by several businesses, use in Internet’s main branch that is service provider Internet. Users surf the Internet through Internet provider ISP. At the beginning of 1994, American government established 4 Internet access point NAP (Network Access Point). Since 1994, The Internet gradually evolved into a multi-level ISP structure network. In 1996, the speed of the main branch was 155mb/s. in 1998, the speed of the main branch was 2.5GB/s.

           With the development of computer technology & communication technology and its interaction with each other, The Internet begins to develop accordingly. By using computer technology, communication field may improve the ability of communication system. At the same time, the improvement of communication style also benefits the Internet. It is more convenient to collect, transmit, restore and deal with information.

    Development Tendency of Computer Internet

           In 2050, I predict that The Internet will develop in the following tendency. At first, it will develop towards low cost which is belonging to client/server structure. And it will develop towards multi-media communication, mobile communication. Internet Structures are more adaptable to an Internet connection. The whole world will become a joined global network. Computer network should possess an unprecedented width of the line to ensure that it can accept more new services. Computer network should be the practical and more intelligent network. And it should possess high reliability and service quality. It should be ductility to ensure that it can make a rapid response to the fast development. Lastly, it is important to below cost. In general, the distinct feature of the development of Internet in the future will be broadband services and the popularization of all kinds of the mobile terminal. For example, the number of camera mobile phone will be rising. In fact, this has a large demand for Internet broadband and the frequent spectrum. The whole construction of broadband and its application will propel the whole internet development.

           All in all, the development of the Internet shows a dramatically increasing tendency and this tendency will still last until 2050. With the popularization of the Internet, the transmission of the information will be more convenient and at the same time, and it also will benefit from people’s daily life in the future.
