Greenhouse Effect

I. Causes and Effects of the greenhouse effect

Since 1975, the average temperature of the Earth's surface has risen 0.9 degrees Fahrenheit (0.5 degrees Celsius). Greenhouse effect caused global warming has become a focus of world attention. In this regard, we have researched the causes and effect of the greenhouse effect. We learned through the investigation that carbon dioxide due to the burning of coal, oil and natural gas and it is the main factor cause for global warming. Furthermore some problems caused by the greenhouse effect were discussed and put forward some reasonable suggestions in this paper.

From the industrial revolution the global climate become gradual warming. In the Economics of Climate Change published in 2006 shows that if we continue the life style currently, global temperatures will be likely to rise 4 Celsius by 2100. Meanwhile, the British "Guardian" said if the temperature keep rising like this, will disrupt the lives of millions of people in worldwide, and even health and eventually leading to massive migration and global conflicts. Moreover global warming is caused by the greenhouse effect.

The root cause of the greenhouse effect

Greenhouse gases can effectively absorb the infrared radiation from Earth's surface, atmosphere and cloud. Atmospheric radiation is emitted to all sides, including the Earth surface. Greenhouse gases trap heat on the surface in troposphere system. This is called the "natural greenhouse effect." Atmospheric radiation is strongly coupled with Temperature levels of discharge. In the troposphere, the temperature generally decreases with height raised. From the infrared radiation emitted to space a certain height, on average at the height of the temperature of -19 , and to balance with absorb solar radiation, so that the temperature of the Earth's surface can be maintained at an average of 14. With the Increases of greenhouse gas concentrations, resulting in enhanced atmosphere opaque of infrared radiation, which is caused lower temperature and higher altitude emission of effective radiation to space. It will cause radiative forcing and the imbalance can only be compensated by troposphere system temperature risen. This is the "enhanced greenhouse effect."

The direct cause of the greenhouse effect

Modern industrial society excessive burning of coal, oil and gas, a large number of exhaust emissions, combustion of these fuels emit large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere caused greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide gas has the functions of heat-absorbing and thermal insulation. It increased in the atmosphere and results in the formation of an invisible glass, led to the heat from solar radiation to earth cannot diverge into outer space meanwhile reflect infrared, with the result that the earth's surface become warming. Thus, carbon dioxide is also known as greenhouse gases.

Since 1975, the average temperature of the Earth's surface has risen 0.9 degrees Fahrenheit (0.5 degrees Celsius); global warming caused by the greenhouse effect has become a focus of world attention. Academia has been accepted theory that carbon dioxide from burning coal, oil and natural gas cause for global warming. However, after decades of observational studies, James Hansen from the United States Goddard Space Studies Institute propose a new view that the main greenhouse gas is not carbon dioxide, but for soot dust and other substances. Soot dust is a solid particulate matter, mainly due to low carbon utilization when burning the amount of high-carbon coal and diesel fuel and it is not only a waste of resources, but also cause environmental pollution. A large number of carbon particles accumulation in troposphere result in clouds Gathering, it is the beginning of greenhouse effect. 40-90% of the heat to the ground generated by the clouds effect on atmospheric counter radiation, the thicker the cloud the less heat spread out, so the climate become warming. Hansen has recorded the changes of various greenhouse gas concentrations for many years and found that from 1950 to 1970 the amount of carbon dioxide has nearly tripled, but carbon dioxide decreased from the late 1970s to the 1990s. With the popular theory is difficult to explain the phenomenon of global warming which is still deteriorating. Hansen believes that in addition to carbon dust, there are other substances can cause greenhouse gases, such as tropospheric ozone (normally the ozone in the stratosphere), methane, as well as chlorofluorocarbon. But these sources of air pollution are harder to governance. Fortunately, the levels of greenhouse gases beside carbon dioxide has a certain decline in recent decades, should the methane and tropospheric ozone content can be decreased year by year, the Earth's average surface temperature would not change in next 50 years.

At present, it is a fact that carbon dioxide in atmospheric and global temperature is increasing rapidly, and t greenhouse gases increasing will cause global warming. It will be late for wait until we can clearly perceive obvious climate change. So now we must pay attention and take measures to protect the atmosphere environment.
