In the essay---the skull and the Mask, Schumacher displays two aspects for us. One is the internal needs and external wants; the other one is the post-modernism and the rhetorical figure.


In contrast to the ancient art which treats the outer appearance of the architecture seriously, nowadays more and more artists pay attention to the whole structure of building. An artist makes a comparison between the interior design and the exterior design. The religious Modern architecture makes a contribution to the continuity of the internal space and external space. 


In the modern world, the term “meaning” is gradually in replace of the term “function”. In the 1970s, some architects reuse the rhetorical figures in the architecture. Some designers try to create a new conception and want to change the common thought in the people’s mind about design. The use of the known word or the design is easily understood by people. The author illustrates two examples for the readers. In consideration of the difference between the literal and the typical structure, they use the term more carefully. The different elements in constructing the buildings may play the role of deciding the internal and the external appearance. The post-modernism really has a significant difference between the traditional architecture. In the beginning, the use of the elements are various, but with the time change, more and more buildings begin to ignore the utility of the features. The reuse of the components will bring more fresh parts to the new composition.
